-- Overview --
TMQG can provide
an "independent viewpoint" that frequently identifies potential
problem areas and offers solutions that are favorable to the client.
Business environments have become
increasingly competitive. Small to medium (SMB) businesses and
organizations are forced to review their existing resource capabilities,
identify areas of potential improvement, and then seek possible solutions
to those targeted areas.
In many cases, solutions that are ultimately selected for consideration
frequently include a vendor management of the entire project. This
is favorable for both parties, as the client can -- after due diligence of
verifying references -- focus on other, more critical areas requiring
their attention. The vendor can apply experience obtained from
previous engagements and provide the client with end-to-end installation
services.
In other cases, however, delegation of project management responsibilities
may prove to be in bad judgment. One such case is when the project
involves multiple vendors. Who will coordinate the different
vendors, especially if one is providing hardware and another is providing
a software solution?
Software vendors frequently provide both hardware and software.
Frequently, the costs for hardware are "bumped" up to include a
small profit for the software provider -- especially when pre-deployment
preparation of the hardware is required.
Does this mean the solution - or the software vendor - should not be
considered? No, absolutely not!! Bundled solutions
often provide clients with the best configuration possible, as the
software provider has already tested the solution and can use that
knowledge and experience to offer a more realistic, reliable solution to
you.
But their inherent bias and ultimate profit motives must be accepted,
understood and dealt with.
However, prospects should take precautions BEFORE they sign to identify
potential pitfalls. Unfortunately, in too many cases, the client is
unprepared to evaluate the technology aspects of the solution.
